The Franciscan Convent of Scarzuola was founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1218, who planted a laurel bush and a rose bush there, causing a spring of water to spring up.
It owes its name to a marsh plant, the Scarza, which the saint used to build himself a hut. The spring has never ceased to nourish the sacred place with its water, a fountain of living water in the woods toward the rising of the sun the one impetrated by the Holy Father Francis. The church "Sancte Marie loci fratrum minorum de Scarciola," originally consisting of a simple rectangular hall covered by a slightly acute barrel vault, has been profoundly modified over the centuries. The apse of the church holds a fresco from the first half of the 13th century depicting St. Francis in levitation.
